The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 8: Shine in the Storm

It seemed that eventually I’d break off from my trend of watching recent(-ish) anime made at earliest in the new millennium and perhaps take a stab at something older, more classic. That time had come. One of my close friends is a huge fan of the Gundam franchise, and when inquired “what was your favourite title from Gundam?” he immediately recommended upon me Mobile Suit Gundam: the 08th MS team. A 12-episode OVA made in 1996, it taught me a few things about what’s truly valuable in an anime. Not top-tier visuals, not elaborate drama or intricate plot lines, and certainly not moe characters.

Because sometimes, adding giant robots just does it all.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 7: 2011–Top 7 Favourite Moments

Well right from the very beginning, even before my initial 12 Days of Christmas plans have been formulated, I’ve planned a top (insert number) anime/series/whatever of 2011. And, here we are. My top 7 favourite anime shows, and one favourite moment from each. They’ll be in descending order, a la Cracked.com, because those guys are just awesome.

And yes, I set it up so the “top 7” post occurs on “Day 7”. Witty, aren’t I?

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 6: Capturing the Feeling

If you’ve read my Iyashikei post, you might have some idea what this post is going to be about.

So after my expression of love for Tamayura ~hitotose~ and Iyashikei, I went ahead and watched the Tamayura OVA, the predecessor (prequel?) to the Tamayura TV series.

And oh boy, was it great.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 5: Major League Management

A few weeks ago, my friends and I went to the movies to watch “Moneyball”. For those of you who have not seen it, the story plays out like this:

General Manager, Billy Beane, of crappy baseball team Oakland A’s leads his formerly bottom-of-league to victory…or so it seems. He does it all with the magic of computer-generated analysis of each individual players, to collect a world-series-worthy roster on a tight budget. He almost succeeds, but then the film get all tragic and the Oakland A’s lose their 20-game winning streak because of some voodoo jinx that happens when Beane goes to watch the game.

Tl;dr: Manager of baseball team takes previously crappy team and builds them into winners of World Series/Koushien, and at the cost of nothing. Sound familiar?

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 4: Power in Numbers

I mentioned yesterday that I would be talking about an “altogether different type of anime club” today. That is the SCCSAV.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 3: My Real-life Genshiken

For those of you who have not watched “Genshiken” before, allow me to elaborate: Genshiken is an anime in which the protagonist, Kanji Sasahara joins the “Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture”. It is also called the “Genshiken, a group of like-minded individuals who formed their own club to celebrate and share their love for the anime fandom.

For many, the Genshiken is a much idealized club, containing the essence of what all fans look for in such a club. It is certain that this show itself drew inspiration from real-life counterparts that may be quite similar in operation and atmosphere. The reason I am using the Genshiken as a pretext is because I wish to put forth my thoughts on the manga/anime club at my high school. Yes, I am part of an actual, anime club at school, and unfortunately not every moment is filled with robots, explosions, rainbows and awesomeness.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 2: Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo OST

hoshi kodomo

The aim of this “12 days of anime/Christmas” thing is for us bloggers to reflect back on what we were thankful for over the year, what caught our eye, and what really made us think. Just a week ago, I finally got the chance to watch my long-awaited newest work of one of my most favourite directors, Makoto Shinkai.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 1: An Introduction…Of Sorts

“Why an intro post? I thought the 12 Days of Christmas posts were all supposed to be anime-related?” you ask, “What is this strange meta-humour-esque thing you are trying to pull?”

Well….It’s a long story. I’ll get to it in a bit, for those who are interested in my mundane mishaps and spectacular failures. All griping aside, let’s kick off this year’s “Twelve Days of Anime”!

Another Update!

If you are regular follower of this blog (in which case, I express my heartiest gratitude), you may have noticed things are a little dead around here. Yes, I spent the majority of available blogging time in the past week and a half churning out the [Iyashikei post], but I realized that any major change in my blogging frequency and/or focus isn’t going to work. Or, at least, is very difficult.

Iyashikei Goodness

Alright. After the one-year point of my blogging career has passed, I figured it would be a good time to take a stab at an editorial. So here goes a (probably vain) attempt.

Iyashikei. I don’t think there’s something that’s ever been so big a part in my anime-watching career, yet I was not able to put a name to it. In fact, a few of the first anime titles I’ve ever watched, as well as some of my favorites, all gave me what I call “the Iyashikei effect”.
