Valentine’s Day Shenanigans

Well give me points for tact for posting this a full four days after it happened and a full 3.5 days after anyone last cared.

But on Valentine’s day, I hung out with some awesome SCCSAV folks watching cheesy romcoms and trying our best to forget how we spectacularly failed the Amagami Challenge once more last year. What originally was just a light-hearted viewing of Itazura na Kiss quickly turned into a willy-nilly English livedub of the whole shebang. It was lots of fun, and inherently hilarious.

Oh? And it turns out that this event has yielded something unexpected!

The Kotatsu Winter 2012 Season Preview!

931552Cutting it close again…even after swearing that I’d never do it again after putting out the Fall preview 2 days after the first show in it aired. Anyway, first show of Winter 2012 is tomorrow, because those pre-airs and whatnot are confusing and useless.

Time has flown, and it’s already been a year since I wrote my first episodic (link not included because you really would not want to read it). As we forge on into a new year, new things are presented to us. Some good, some rather disappointing, but more specifically I am eternally grateful that I am now not as rash and inexperienced as to force myself to go through something Infinite Stratos again.

Obligatory Happy New Year/Status Update

931995

A pretty cute pic from the second best show of 2011

Well, hello everyone, and hello 2012! This is a whole new year, and a chance for a whole new beginning! Ok, not really.

As shown rather well by the rardiness of this “Happy New Year” post itself, I have been slacking off on blogging recently. The 12 Days of Christmas were taxing, to say the least, but now the excuse of taking a break after that strenuous exercise has begun to grown old. With the Winter 2012 season approaching, I felt like I am obliged to do something before it starts.

Oh yeah, season preview. God damn it, I forgot. I’m not getting old, but I might be starting to burn out from blogging. Just a little.

And that is actually so damn scary.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 12: Anime Secret Santa: The Flightless Grey Wings

This post is a part of Reverse Thieves’ Anime Secret Santa Project. In short, the project is where a bunch of people submit their name, blog, and three anime recommendations to someone who they are “secret santa” for. That person must watch and review at least one of those recommendations, and all reviews are posted on December 24th. Well, it turns out I pulled another stupid move involving dates and thought it was supposed to be posted on the 25th.

Ahh, well. At any rate, a very merry Christmas goes out from me to you! Hope you had/are having/going to have a wonderful day hanging out with family, friends, your waifu, or whomever else you fancy.

My choices for Secret Santa were: Planetes, Ichigo Marshmallow, and Haibane Renmei. I chose Haibane Renmei out of the three because:

- Planetes looks very interesting, but unfortunately time constraints probably wouldn’t have allowed me to go through a 20+ ep show

- I’ve heard a lot of good things about Haibane Renmei, and coincidentally a SCCSAV livewatch of it was set up a week after I received this list.

So here we are, after watching Haibane Renmei I believe I made the correct choice, and if not for this project, I wouldn’t have ever had the initiative to discover and watch this wonderful series.

I tried to go for something Christmas-y, but nothing could be found.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 11: Chase the Clouds, Chase the Feeling

It was inevitable. I wouldn’t have forgiven myself if I didn’t dedicate a 12 Days post to Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo.

There are many great reasons Makoto Shinkai is my most favourite director of animated film. His dazzling visuals and his ability to convey raw human emotion in spite of plot holes and inconsistencies are just some of them.

Hoshi Kodomo has had no compromises in terms of quality. Yes, I admit that when compared to previous Shinkai films; it fits somewhere between Byousoku 5cm and Beyond the Clouds, but as a standalone film I’d say it definitely takes the top 2 for 2011.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 10: OP/ED Extravaganza

So, I ran out of time. While the “week of hell” in school is finally over, I also find myself at another dilemma. Time is at a premium, and I have a maximum of 5 total hours before Christmas day to finish my Secret Santa anime and write 3 posts.

914545

I really don’t want to say this, but sometimes having a social life is suffering.

And P.S., this OP/ED post is a tad uninspired, and I’ll have you know it was NOT in the original plan. My head will probably roll if certain people find out what I cancelled to write this.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 9: Hacking to the Gate

Sometimes in life, you do things you regret. Sometimes you do things you regret so much that you just want to be able to go back and do it all over again, while punching your past self in the face for being such a colossal idiot for f*cking up. Inter-temporal beat-downs aside, these sorts of time-traveling adventures are what forms the basis of Steins;Gate.

Because sometimes, you do things you’ll regret, and you won’t even know until it’s too late.

Unless there isn’t a “too late”.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 8: Shine in the Storm

It seemed that eventually I’d break off from my trend of watching recent(-ish) anime made at earliest in the new millennium and perhaps take a stab at something older, more classic. That time had come. One of my close friends is a huge fan of the Gundam franchise, and when inquired “what was your favourite title from Gundam?” he immediately recommended upon me Mobile Suit Gundam: the 08th MS team. A 12-episode OVA made in 1996, it taught me a few things about what’s truly valuable in an anime. Not top-tier visuals, not elaborate drama or intricate plot lines, and certainly not moe characters.

Because sometimes, adding giant robots just does it all.

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 7: 2011–Top 7 Favourite Moments

Well right from the very beginning, even before my initial 12 Days of Christmas plans have been formulated, I’ve planned a top (insert number) anime/series/whatever of 2011. And, here we are. My top 7 favourite anime shows, and one favourite moment from each. They’ll be in descending order, a la Cracked.com, because those guys are just awesome.

And yes, I set it up so the “top 7” post occurs on “Day 7”. Witty, aren’t I?

The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 6: Capturing the Feeling

If you’ve read my Iyashikei post, you might have some idea what this post is going to be about.

So after my expression of love for Tamayura ~hitotose~ and Iyashikei, I went ahead and watched the Tamayura OVA, the predecessor (prequel?) to the Tamayura TV series.

And oh boy, was it great.
